Safety Is Our Culture

At McCluskey Transportation, we believe safety is an ongoing effort where everyone works together to deliver it daily. Our Safely Together culture starts with hiring for the right mindset, includes training to the highest standards, and requires ongoing reinforcement: supported by strong monitoring of compliance and quality control. We also maintain ongoing engagement and safety campaigns to reinforce safe practices every day.

Your Students Are Our Priority

Your Students Are Our Priority

As a leader in student transportation, we will never compromise the care or safety of our passengers. We believe that a positive experience on the school bus carries into the classroom and nurtures a rewarding experience at school. We work closely with our customers to create constructive student safety programs. Every day, we work Safely Together, with our drivers, families, schools, and communities, to ensure students arrive at school and return home safely.

Driver Training

Driver Training

Thorough and professional training is critical to a driver’s confidence in their job. Each driver we employ completes annual training using the industry-recognized program, The Driver Training Course. This is a comprehensive system covering everything a bus driver needs to know, while preparing them to manage their passengers with the utmost safety and care.

Double Check for Sleeping Children

Double Check for Sleeping Children

To ensure that no child is ever left unattended on one of our vehicles, our drivers are required to park their bus in a secure location and perform a complete Child-Check procedure at the end of every route, every time.

Every driver trained to perform a mandatory child-check at the end of every route, every time, physically inspecting the bus to ensure no student is left behind. When buses return to the location lot, a subsequent  DOUBLE check is conducted of all our vehicles. All vehicles are also equipped with electronic reminder systems to support this process.

Staying Aware of the Danger Zones

The school bus “danger zones” are the areas on all sides of the bus where students are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver. Typically, this is the 3 metres in front of the bus (where the driver may be seated too low to see a child), the 3 metres on either side of the bus (in the driver’s blind spot), and the area behind the bus. Leading practices to reduce the risks of students in danger zones include:

  • Explain what the Danger Zone is for areas around the school bus
  • Teach students the proper street crossing procedures and safety precautions
  • Ask all backpack and purse drawstrings, cords, or straps be tucked away
  • Drivers count how many students leave the bus and track their location before pulling away from a stop
Ensuring a Safe, Reliable Fleet

Ensuring a Safe, Reliable Fleet

The safe transportation of our passengers depends not only on our team members – but on the reliability of the vehicles we operate. Onboard vehicle technology, safety and compliance systems, routing and scheduling programs, and fleet maintenance software are all innovations that we invest in heavily to ensure we are providing the safest service possible when transporting our students and other passengers.
